On Friday, September 19th the OUGL Copy Center will cease operations.

The Libraries and Creative+Communications have agreed that:

  • All services provided by OUGL Copy Center will be provided by the Dawg Prints Center in the Communications Building, Communications B042.
  • Hours of the Communications Copy Center will be extended. They will be: Monday-Thursday, 8AM-8PM; Friday, 8AM-6PM; and Saturday & Sunday, 1-5PM
  • More self-service printing stations have been added to Odegaard.
  • OUGL now has a Dawg-Prints/Husky Card add-value station/dispenser.

While the Libraries regrets the closure of the OUGL Copy Center, we are grateful for the years of service provided to students,faculty and staff.

Theresa Mudrock, the history librarian in the Reference & Research Services Division of UW Libraries, is the recipient of the first-ever Distinguished Librarian Award. She was the creator of the exhibit, Interrupted Lives, which dealt with Japanese American students at the University during World War II.

Theresa will be honored along with other University award winners at the annual Recognition Ceremony, set for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

This summer, the UW Libraries will be switching to new databases for general periodical, business and newspaper research. EBSCO Academic Search Complete, EBSCO Business Source Complete and NewsBank Access World News will replace our suite of ProQuest databases and provide expanded coverage of journals, business resources and U.S. and international news.

All periodicals which can be checked out are now requestable online. This applies to both bound and unbound (recent, single issues) periodicals. Just follow the same procedures you use for requesting books and other materials: Click on the 'Request Item' button in WorldCat Local or the 'Request/Place Hold' button in the UW Libraries Catalog and follow the prompts.

The first-ever Distinguished Librarian Award has been established by the Dean of University Libraries, in cooperation with the Association of Librarians of the University of Washington, in the amount of $5,000.

This annual award will recognize a librarian whose contributions advance the mission of the Libraries and the University in the areas of teaching, learning, research, and innovative approaches to practice. Librarians at UW Seattle, Bothell, Tacoma, and the M.G. Gallagher Law Library are eligible.

The Selection Committee for the 2008 Distinguished Librarian Award is calling for nominations. To submit a nomination, send contact information (including name, address, phone number, and e-mail address) for yourself and the nominee, and a short essay (no more than 500 words) describing the nominee's accomplishments and how he or she contributes to the Libraries and to the University, to the chair of the selection committee, Paula Walker, Office of the Dean of University Libraries, Allen Library, Box 352900, pwalker@u.washington.edu.

The deadline for nominations is February 29, 2008.

The award will be announced in May, with a reception held in early June at the Libraries to honor the recipient.

106 photographic portraits from a 1915 album of local Civil War veterans who had fought for the Union and then formed the Grand
Army of the Republic. The leather-bound album was donated to the Seattle Public Library in 1971.
