How can I improve my students’ research skills and their ability to select and evaluate information relevant to my course?

Email your librarian@UW.The subject liaison for your area can work with you to create a discipline-specific Class web page of resources (including research databases, books and reference sources) tailored to the needs of your course. View examples of Class web pages.

Schedule a workshop with a librarian to teach your students the research and information skills necessary to succeed in your class and in college. UWEO instructors may also contact Lauren Ray, Educational Outreach Services Librarian about scheduling a library workshop, or delivering a workshop through web conferencing.

Online tutorials focused on researching specific topics can be developed for your class. Contact the Educational Outreach Services Librarian to find out more about options for video tutorials.

How can I make UW Libraries articles, books, and multimedia materials available to my students online?

E-Reserves allows you to put materials such as articles, audio files, chapters, class notes, presentations, solutions, images, video files and syllabi online. You can manage your own E-Reserves on the library server. To get started, visit the Course Reserves Page.

Create a proxied (password-protected) URL for articles and e-book chapters that you'd like to link on your course web pages and syllabi. This will allow your students to view materials available through the Libraries licensed resources from off-campus.

How can I find and present films, documentaries or audio recordings in my class?

Search for DVDs, CDs and other media held in the Libraries Media Center.

Schedule Media Center materials for your class, or place media items on reserve for your class.

Contact the Libraries Media Center to find out other options for showing media in your class.

Classroom Support Services provides comprehensive media support and services for in-classroom instruction, including audio-visual equipment, computing classrooms, and instructional equipment consulting.

How can I include information on Research Help at the UW Libraries on my Course web page?

Include a link to the Research Help page of the UW Libraries website on your Course web page.

Find out how to include Qwidget, the UW Libraries 24/7 Chat widget on your class webpage, so that students can chat with a librarian directly from your page. Contact the Educational Outreach Services Librarian to find out more.

How can I create more effective assignments for my students?

The Designing Assignments Guide provides tips on developing students’ research skills, critical thinking skills and subject knowledge.

Plagiarism Prevention: a UW Resource Guide offers support in identifying strategies that minimize the potential for plagiarism in your class.

The Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR) staff can consult with UW faculty members on questions related to teaching, learning, and assessment. Consultations are discipline-specific, confidential, and free to UW instructors.
